Lily on the Grandstand  (1990)  8x10” intaglio engraving on Plexiglas.

This was an unusual assignment.  I first took a black-and-white photograph of Lily, then enlarged it.  I taped the enlargement to a piece of Plexiglas.  Then I carefully etched the picture into the plastic using a sharp etching tool.  Making a print from this material produces a soft, ethereal effect, and it’s easy to make fairly exact copies this way, too, since one is essentially tracing over a picture.  Unfortunately, Plexiglas is quite soft, and it’s possible to make only about two or three good prints from it.

The grandstand in the picture was an ancient ruin in Alcyon Park, Pitman, NJ.  Sad to say, it was demolished around 1995 or 1996.

Lily with Twins (1990)

Prints of this painting are available at http://www.artprintoncanvas.com/

The above two drawings are an interesting assignment I had while in college.  I was to photocopy a black-and-white photograph, cut out a small square (The professor even tossed a stencil of a square onto my photocopies to properly randomize things), temporarily stick the square onto a piece of illustration board, and draw a complete picture radiating out from that square.  Then I was to peel off the square and fill in the space – all without copying the original picture.  Take a good look at the detail; you can see a small lamprey or something attached to the aquatic person’s head in the top picture, and two people walking around on opposite sides of the cabbagey-looking “asteroid” in the above picture.

Cover design for the Mother’s Day edition of a small-press magazine printed by and for the Chinese-American community of Cherry Hill, NJ.  (1989, pen & ink on paper, 5.5x6.5”)  Unfortunately, I never found out if it was used!  The magazine’s publisher, who commissioned the art, had to go back to Taiwan for some reason – and I never saw her again.  Good thing I made a photocopy for my records.  Note: the heavy dark areas in the drawing form two Chinese characters.  Those in the mother form the word for “mother” (pronounced “nu” in Mandarin); those in the baby and Mom’s right sleeve form the word for “child” (pronounced “tzu”).  When the two characters are written next to each other, they form the word “hao,” which means “good.”

Untitled  (“Egg Woman”)  (1990) 8.5x11” pencil on board.
